Mott The Hoople '74 - 45th Anniversary Tour

Tuesday 23 April, 7.30pm, Sage One

From 1969 to 1973, Mott The Hoople was a two-headed beast, with song-writing duties split between Ian Hunter and Mick Ralphs, as well as the odd notable exception from Verden Allen.

By the end of 1973, Ralphs and Allen had both left the band to see what else was out there for them, leaving Ian Hunter as the sole songwriter.

With Hunter now given free reign, 1974’s The Hoople explored ideas and concepts that are now widely credited as having influenced everyone from the punk movement to Queen. 1974 was also arguably Mott’s most intensely creative period with the studio album, four hit singles – Roll Away The Stone, The Golden Age Of Rock ’n’ Roll, Foxy Foxy and Saturday Gigs – plus a live album, half of which was taken from their week long stint at the Uris Theatre, Broadway.

In 2009 and 2013, the 1969 / 1973 line up completed two highly successful reunion tours. At the time, many fans asked whether it would ever be possible to see the ‘Class Of ’74’ – Ian Hunter, Ariel Bender and Morgan Fisher – back together again.

In 2018, the trio of Hunter, Bender and Fisher, augmented by Ian’s long term backing band, The Rant Band, played three festivals. It’s fair to say that the festivals took people by surprise, the band showing a renewed energy and spirit.

Modern Fairies: The Gatherings

Saturday 27 April - Sunday 28 April, 2pm 7.30pm, Northern Rock Foundation Hall

Modern Fairies is a unique collaboration between leading songwriters, musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers and researchers to develop exciting new work, presenting fresh perspectives on what folklore means to us in the modern world.

The Fairy Gatherings breathe new life into less well-known traditional tales. Focussing on the story-world of British folk-tales about fairies and the supernatural, we explore how this material can be re-mediated to be made relevant to modern audiences.

The narratives foreground vital modern themes of individual identity and self-determination. Arguing that the vivid dramatisation of timeless and enduring truths about human existence still communicates powerfully today. The timeless speaks now, through urgent new voices compelling us to listen.

Tales about fairies are usually thought of as the province of children, yet the success of works such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft proves that the mythical past still holds the power to enthral adult audiences.

Traditional folk tales speak to contemporary concerns and anxieties. These can teach lasting truths about romantic relationships, about exotic strangers and homeliness, stability and risk-taking – the academic and obscure becomes relevant, immediate and vivid.

The fantasy of the fairy world offers escape to a place of light and beauty, of endless food and drink, of laughter and happiness, where we can once more find those we thought lost forever. Yet there is a real cost to escape: priorities become skewed, responsibilities ignored, and fairy pleasures have a habit of becoming all-consuming and addictive. The allure draws people away from what is really important into a dangerous world of make-believe.

Nouvelle Vague - 15th Anniversary Tour + special guests

Saturday 27 April, 8pm, Sage Two

Nossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave. The group’s first two albums, Nouvelle Vague (2004) and Bande A Part (2006) defined their unique sound with Bossa versions of New Wave Classics. Their third album, NV3 (2009) featured collaborations with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, Ian McCullouch from Echo and the Bunnymen, Terry Hall from The Specials, Barry Adamson, The Saints & Minimal Compact. Nouvelle Vague are Marc Collin, Olivier Libaux, Mélanie Pain, Elodie Frégé and Liset Alea.
