Saturday 25 May, 7.30pm
- Grant Gershon conductor
- Peter Sellars director
- Los Angeles Master Chorale
- Orlando di Lasso Lagrime di San Pietro (The Tears of St Peter)
In its only performance outside London!
‘Lagrime is a major accomplishment for the Master Chorale, which sang and acted brilliantly. It’s also a major accomplishment for music history.’ - Mark Swed, LA Times
Ground-breaking American director Peter Sellars has created a new, iconic production of a Renaissance masterpiece.
A visceral, enthralling performance – deploying the stellar singers of the LA Master Chorale to such dramatic, contemporary effect that you forget you are listening to music written more than 400 years ago. Beautifully designed and lit, this staging makes the most of the universal story of friendship, betrayal, and grief, packing a raw emotional punch.
Written in the weeks before his death, the composer knew Lagrime di San Pietro would be his last work, and channelled all of his pain and remorse into a towering work of beauty. His final statement.
Director Peter Sellars was so inspired by the power of the music that he decided to create a choral performance unlike any other. Twenty-one singers from Los Angeles Master Chorale – professional choir-in-residence at LA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall – bring all their technical excellence to a new vision of artistic daring, singing the entire, intricate 75-minute piece from memory, unaccompanied and thrillingly staged for our times.

Since their formation in 1983, the band have built up a rich discography comprising 10 albums along with notable tracks such as She Sells Sanctuary and Fire Woman.

Thea Gilmore plus Matt Owens
Sunday 26 May, 8pm
Small World Turning is Thea’s first new collection of songs since 2017’s The Counterweight, which was her third successive top 40 album.
An artist of enduring international acclaim (Bruce Springsteen regularly names her as a favourite) and a justly revered lyricist, Gilmore’s musical settings have taken many ingenious detours in recent years. Small World Turning nails it’s colours to a very different mast from the get-go.
Acoustic guitars are back to the fore, and a quintessentially rootsy array of instruments frame them – fiddles, whistles, mandolins, tenor banjos are all in abundance. Small World Turning is an album with an unashamed folk flavour and features contributions from Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman, Sam Lakeman, Katriona Gilmore, Jamie Roberts and BBC Radio 2’s Young Folk Award winner 2013 Ciaran Algar.
"DJ Woody is the best video DJ set Ive ever seen!"
