They may not have used that word as such, and many may not have recognised or realised that lonely is what they have been experiencing. Instead they say:
- A lot of my friends are married and having families and not available to go out as much as before
- I’ve moved to a new area for work and don’t know many people socially
- My children are growing up and have their own social life these days
- I just got divorced and am looking for new interests
The charity Mind say that “feeling lonely isn’t in itself a mental health problem, but the two are strongly linked. Having a mental health problem increases you chance of feeling lonely and feeling lonely can have a negative impact on your mental health”.
Loneliness Awareness Week runs from 17th to 21st June 2019 and was set up by the Marmalade Trust in 2017. It offers practical help and advice for people of all ages and as a charity they are dedicated to tackling loneliness across society and helping people to make new friendships. In addition, they are highlighting events, including ones hosted by Spice Manchester, being run that week across the country.
