Cannabidiol (CBD) has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past few years, showing up in drinks, baked goods and all sort of sweets… but what is CBD oil and how does it work? Here’s a quick explainer…
What is CBD oil?
CBD the major compound found in all cannabis plants that is responsible for its revolutionary health promoting properties. CBD or Canabidiol, is like a brother or sister to the more commonly known compound THC. However, unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, so is safe for the whole family as it produces no high.
How does CBD work?
CBD is a phytocannabinoid; a type of cannabinoid that is consumed rather than naturally created by the body (endocannabinoids). CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system and receptors in the brain to help with the mediation of pain perception and provide a general boost in well-being. Where does CBD come from?
CBD oils are extracted from Cannabis Sativa plants and accounts for 40% of the extracts taken out. Although the CBD compound is present in psychoactive cannabis (marijuana) and non-psychoactive cannabis (hemp), CBD oil is extracted from the plant and the THC components are removed.
