A care home in Poole has granted the wish of one of the residents by inviting a local biker group down to surprise him with a motorbike ride.
The care team at Care UK’s The Potteries, on York Road, knew that 91-year-old resident, Edward Whitefield, also known as Ted, was a keen motorcyclist in his youth, so when he expressed a wish to ride a bike again, they set out to make it happen.
The team got in touch with local biker club, Arrowhead Trike N Bike Club, to organise a surprise delivery of a modified bike for Ted to take a ride on. On the day, Ted was shocked and delighted to enjoy a ride around Poole.
Even better, the biker club went one step further to make Ted’s day, by accompanying him en masse for his first ride in 54 years.
Zita Turner, home manager at The Potteries, said: “Our Wishing Tree initiative is very popular, and it’s so rewarding to make residents wishes come true.
“Ted is well known by the care team for his love of motorbikes, so it was a very special moment to see his face when he saw the bikes. He was in his element and has had a smile on his face ever since. Thank you to Arrowhead Trike N Bike Club for coming down and taking Ted out on the bike, I’ve never heard him laugh so much!”
Edward Whitfield, resident at The Potteries, said: “It was so good to get back on a bike again and remember how much I love the speed! I was delighted to see all the bikers turn up and ride around. It was a day I will never forget!”
